I am always testing colors on scraps while I am working to see if the color is the right shade. Or if it is opaque enough or transparent enough. Or if it is a good color match. Or if I like it with the other colors I’ve selected.

I used to throw those scraps away. But, the next time I wanted to test the same color, I tested the color on new scraps. And one day, I wondered “How many times have I tested this same color? Geez!”

So I decided to get more organized and began to collect all of my colors into a single Color Journal. I try to test on the same types of papers and materials that I will actually use in my projects, to get the best representation of a given color.

Now I can get my Color Journal out and look at any test of any color whenever I want. And, as I add new colors and products, I can easily make new tests and add them to my journal. I can also take it with me on shopping trips, so I won’t buy duplicates. Or to find and buy new items that match or coordinate well with what I already own.

Scrapbook Trends Magazine published an article about my color journal on their blog in March 2010. And one of my most popular Color Journal posts continues to be the one about Distress Inks.

Here are my posts regarding my color journal:
